The RSPH Level 2 Award in Understanding Health Improvement is nationally recognised and is part of the Qualifications  and Credit Framework, mapped to National Occupational Standards, Skills for Health competencies and the Public Health Skills and Career Framework.
The award is designed to give a firm grounding to key individuals who are responsible for health improvement initiatives within their community, workplace or voluntary organisation. It provides knowledge and understanding of the benefits of good health and wellbeing, and of barriers to making a change in lifestyle. It is particularly relevant to people working in the communities including pharmacies, sports centres, prisons, care homes, colleges or schools, and those with responsibility for staff welfare.
The qualification is specifically designed for people who work with the public in a health environment and who have an interest in developing public health skills. Holders of this qualification will have the underpinning knowledge and understanding necessary to work effectively in helping people who need support and encouragement to make positive changes in their lives, including how to help them access further assistance (in, for example, identifying barriers to change, and setting goals) towards the objective of adopting and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. The training requires 7 guided learning hours and requires the individual to pass a 45 minute multiple-choice examination consisting of 30 multiple choice questions.

NHS Portsmouth identified this qualification as being appropriate as part of the HLP programme and for individuals working within community pharmacy who could make proactive health interventions and offer brief advice, signposting to services and link into the local Health Trainers.
